Creative Ideas With Roald Dahl in #KidsActivityHour

We had great fun today in #KidsActivityHour, celebrating 100 years of Roald Dahl with some excellent activities you can do with the kids. Roald Dahl is a true legend where kids are concerned and with the success of his books and the release of the film The BFG, we decided to dedicate this week’s activity hour to Roald Dahl . We loved making dream catchers and dream jars, and hope you will too!

How to make them:

Making these Dreamcatchers is a simple and exciting activity for kids where they can learn more about the story of The BFG as well as developing their creative skills.

1. To start with simply trace around a bowl in the middle of the paper plate and cut it out.
2. Then paint the paper plate – we used the sponge painting technique here just like last week’s Sunflower Painting. Children can leave the plate plain if you or they prefer.

3. After the paint has dried, mark out a star shape with a pencil and make holes using a hole puncher (we recommend a 1 hole puncher, as it’s much easier than a double one.)

4. Once the holes have been created, thread the wool through the holes to make a star shape (we used a plastic needle which helps kids to thread more easily).

5. A top tip : Tie the ends into a knot so the wool doesn’t fall out of the holes and a little sellotape will help keep it in place.

6. To decorate your plate, stick on sequins, glitter, stickers to make it how you want it to look.
7. Then cut 3 pieces of wool and tie them to 3 of the existing holes from the star and let them dangle. Make the dangling wool look pretty with beads and sellotape your coloured feathers on the wool.

Dream Jars

To keep in with the theme of The BFG we also made our own dream jars. This is a simple activity which your kids will love.
You will need:
– Jar
– Stickers
– Glue
– Cut out shapes & scissors
– Glitter Pens
– Food Colouring & water (of your choice)
– Glitter

How to make them:

1. Grab your jar (this can be any jar, for example an old chutney or jam jar works just as well).

2. Decorate your jar with stickers, and cut out shapes to stick onto your jar with PVA glue as it dries clear. Add some sequins  and stars to make your jars sparkle.

3. For the writing use glitter pens and write your child’s name on the front – this way it becomes their dreams!!!

4. Leave to dry overnight or for a few hours.

4. Then to make your jar more magical for your kids add glitter, food colouring and water to make a sparkly liquid.

Top Tip: If you are doing this activity with younger kids then we recommend you use a plastic jar.

We’d love to see your creations, so once you’ve made them, please email them to help@what2buy4kids.co.uk or simply tweet us @what2buy4kids
